Plans for Print-Free Oxford Dictionary Aren’t Fully Defined

The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word “clarify” as “To free from darkness or gloom; to light up, illumine; to brighten” (in an appearance of the word dating back to 1398) and “To make clear (an obscure subject)” (in a coinage from 1823), among other usages. And that’s what representatives of the O.E.D. did in a statement released Monday after remarks by its chief executive were interpreted to mean that the venerable reference work would be not be released in a paper format for its coming third edition.
