Frontier Deploys Latest Broadband Technology Across Ohio

Marion, Ohio – August 22, 2011 – Customers of Frontier Communications [NYSE: FTR] in Ohio are now enjoying the benefits of the company’s recent aggressive deployment of the latest generation broadband technology. As of July 5, the company fully deployed Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) systems throughout its service area in Ohio. These broadband networks improve the online experience for customers in terms of Internet speeds and broadband availability while enhancing network flexibility and manageability for the company.

Communities now served by this technology include: Ashland, Athens, Bowling Green, Brunswick, Bryan, Cambridge, Celina, Circleville, Dover, Georgetown, Marion, Medina, New Philadelphia, Piketon, Norwalk, Oxford, Sylvania, Troy and Wilmington.

The flexible optical network capabilities of ROADM are important as network capacity continues to grow and as demand for Frontier's higher-capacity residential and business broadband services increases.

Frontier's Packet-Optical Transport Network can now deliver more than 30 different types of residential or business services such as Ethernet (Fiber to the Office or Cell Site), Session Internet Protocol (SIP) trunking, Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Dedicated Internet Access Services (DIA).

Frontier’s High-Speed Internet service is delivered on dedicated lines from the company’s central switching office to the customer’s home or business. The service is supported by local technicians and backed by live, 24/7, 100-percent U.S.-based customer service and technical support.


New residential customers ordering Frontier’s High-Speed Internet services are offered two-hour appointment windows during which a trained technician will install a Frontier wireless router, connect the customer’s computer to the Internet and offer a basic course on how to access and navigate the web.

Frontier plans major upgrade

Frontier Communications will be making major investments to expand broadband service throughout various areas of Ohio after completion of the company’s purchase of Verizon’s landline customer accounts in the state.

Dave Davidson, Frontier Senior Vice President and General Manager for Ohio, said the company has made a number of commitments in the state, including:

- Expanding broadband availability to 85 percent of households within the Frontier service territory by Dec. 31, 2013. The current broadband availability in these areas is approximately 60 percent.

- Making capital investments of at least $110 per access line or a minimum of $50 million per year for each of the next three years.

- Capping basic local telephone rates in Frontier’s service territory at current levels until broadband deployment reaches 85 percent of the households in the Frontier Ohio service territory.

- Retaining the 1,000 to 1,100 existing Verizon employees in Ohio after the acquisition. This includes employees at the Marion Call Center and Norwalk Dispatch Center.

After the acquisition, the company will serve parts of 77 Ohio counties.

“Frontier Communications’ acquisition of Verizon land lines is a positive step for residents and businesses within Southeast Ohio because of their commitment to invest millions of dollars in infrastructure,” Connect Ohio Southeast Region State Operations Manager Bart Winegar said. “This means broadband services will be extended further into unserved areas and businesses will have enhanced product offerings.”
