Fiber-optic lines to be laid in Trumbull

WARREN - Trumbull County is going to benefit from a $44.8 million federal grant to extend broadband access in northern Ohio.

Cleveland-based OneCommunity, leading the effort to bring the network to 27 Ohio counties, is among three groups to share $118 million in stimulus package funding for broadband-access projects in the state, it was announced last week.

OneCommunity spokeswoman Andrea Castrovillari said the project will bring about a $1 million investment to Trumbull County, where 50 miles of robust or ''middle mile'' and another 30 miles of ''last mile'' fiber optic line will be installed.

Cisco to partner with OneCommunity on cutting-edge communication technologies in Northeast Ohio

Cisco Systems, one of the world's largest technology companies, on Thursday said it plans to use the fiber-optic communication infrastructure in Northeast Ohio as a testing ground for some of its latest network technologies.

The company said it has partnered with local non-profit organization OneCommunity to use its ultra high-speed network that connects more than 1,500 hospitals, schools, libraries and local government buildings across Northern Ohio. OneCommunity has been building the network since 2003.

nTelos increases fiber optic network

Waynesboro-based nTelos announced plans Monday to almost double its fiber optic network and take in an additional 100,000 customers.

The telecommunications company will buy FiberNet from One Communications Corp. for $170 million, said nTelos spokesman Mike Minnis.

The move will add 3,500 miles of fiber optic lines to the company’s network, which now runs about 4,500 miles.

Intwine Energy, a leader in the development of Internet connected smart-grid products for both utilities and retail customers, today announced the adoption of its WiFi thermostat technology into Case Western Reserve University's Case Connection Zone pilot research project. The IECT220 and the IECT 210 Intwine WiFi Thermostat, as well as a beta version of the Intwine Energy WiFi Connected Whole-House Power Monitor, which includes the Blueline Innovations sensor, and Smart Plug, have been successfully demonstrated to researchers and will be installed into a beta community.

The Case Connection Zone will bring super high-speed gigabit fiber to approximately 100 residences adjacent to the university as the first step in an initiative to determine how utilization of gigabit Internet connectivity can be made relevant and useful in people's everyday lives. The project will include Internet-enabled services related to health care and wellness, neighborhood and public safety, education and household energy management.

WOW! expands cable, Internet, phone service to University Heights

University Heights residents will have another choice this summer for their cable television, Internet and telephone service.

WOW!, a company based in Englewood, Colo., with a regional office in Berea, will offer service in those categories, Kirk Zerkle, WOW! vice president and system manager, told City Council May 17.

Zerkle said WOW! construction teams hope to begin installing strand, fiber and cable equipment on utility poles in the city this week. They hope to complete their work by the end of September, he said.
