Madison County launching office/tech incubator

By Chris Pugh
Connect Ohio

Madison County is creating a Professional Office/Technology Incubator to attract new businesses to the area.

Madison County Future, Inc. Community Improvement Corporation Executive Director and Director of Development Sean K. Hughes said the incubator will be patterned off of existing models such as Dublin’s Entrepreneurial Center.

“Our incubator will be an opportunity for new business start-ups or existing businesses who want to get out of their home-based business situation and grow to access low overhead office space with shared conference/meeting rooms, break rooms, restrooms, etc.,” Hughes said. “They also will have access to individual business counseling, low-cost training programs, and shared networking opportunities to grow their client bases.”

Hughes said county officials are accepting proposals for various locations throughout the county and planned to have a physical location chosen in June.

“We will then work with that landlord to develop a lease structure and start any necessary building updates or renovations to make the incubator viable,” he said.

Hughes added that one of the requirements of the building will be access to a server/data center which will allow them to release new technology in the county with local businesses.

“This new technology will allow us to continue with a second phase of the incubator in which we can offer a virtual incubator for small professional and technology businesses who wish to remain in home offices, etc.,” he said. “We also hope that the chosen facility will allow us the ability to install a tower for extending our wireless broadband capabilities.”

Elyria newspaper uses Ustream for its news coverage

By Chris Pugh
Connect Ohio

With changes in how many news consumers are moving online with broadband, traditional media sources are using creative ways to keep up.

The Elyria Chronicle-Telegram newspaper is using Ustream on its website to show live video of breaking news stories.

Ustream is a website where users can stream live video of events.

Photographer Bruce Bishop said the paper decided to use the Ustream video service several weeks ago.

“We have been doing some work here and there with a full-sized camera tethered to a laptop, it was cool but not exactly the most stimulating to use,” Bishop said. “Our Web Editor Rona Proudfoot and I have been trying to come up with things to really make our website pop and the idea of doing live coverage of breaking news came up. We have a popular website for the paper and we are tightly integrated with Facebook and have around 7,000 fans, so the idea of doing live video was really tempting because we could get a good audience online quickly.”

Bishop said the paper uses the Droid phone to shoot video.

“We saw it as an opportunity to do something nobody around here was doing,” he said. “The first day we had the phone we had a house fire, and went live with it. While it wasn’t a huge fire one of the comments left on Twitter was “What a great way to show everyone how newspapers can be relevant!”

The photographer said the paper plans to increase the amount of live video it shows on the Internet.

“We are going to keep working toward ever increasing amounts of live news coverage,” Bishop said. “It’s not easy to do because like most papers we have a pretty slim number of people available to cover things. I cover with the phone and a still camera. It limits my ability to do some things but I’ve been a photographer for 20 plus years so multitasking is something I can handle.”

He said the majority of the comments about the news coverage have been positive.

“Live news is nothing new but live coverage of breaking news from the photographer’s perspective is much more intimate and gritty,” he said. “I have to take great pains to avoid showing things that are too disturbing for the average viewer.”

Frontier plans major upgrade

By Chris Pugh
Connect Ohio

Frontier Communications will be making major investments to expand broadband service throughout various areas of Ohio after completion of the company’s purchase of Verizon’s landline customer accounts in the state.

Dave Davidson, Frontier Senior Vice President and General Manager for Ohio, said the company has made a number of commitments in the state, including:

- Expanding broadband availability to 85 percent of households within the Frontier service territory by Dec. 31, 2013. The current broadband availability in these areas is approximately 60 percent.

- Making capital investments of at least $110 per access line or a minimum of $50 million per year for each of the next three years.

- Capping basic local telephone rates in Frontier’s service territory at current levels until broadband deployment reaches 85 percent of the households in the Frontier Ohio service territory.

- Retaining the 1,000 to 1,100 existing Verizon employees in Ohio after the acquisition. This includes employees at the Marion Call Center and Norwalk Dispatch Center.

After the acquisition, the company will serve parts of 77 Ohio counties.

“Frontier Communications’ acquisition of Verizon land lines is a positive step for residents and businesses within Southeast Ohio because of their commitment to invest millions of dollars in infrastructure,” Connect Ohio Southeast Region State Operations Manager Bart Winegar said. “This means broadband services will be extended further into unserved areas and businesses will have enhanced product offerings.”

Cleveland neighborhoods testing ultra high-speed broadband in Case Western Reserve study

Government Technology

Following NBA star LeBron James' much-hyped, nationally televised disowning of his hometown in early July, the Cleveland Cavaliers commanded much of the Ohio city's attention. For months prior, local fans and sportswriters speculated on whether local hero James, who grew up in nearby Akron, would remain with the team or search for greener pastures.

Even before James left the Cavaliers for the Miami Heat, some in Cleveland half-jokingly claimed that James was the only economic driver left in the downtrodden city. Yet less than five miles from the team's home court at Quicken Loans Arena sits Cleveland's premier higher education institution, Case Western Reserve University. Researchers there have begun work on an ambitious project to build out 1 GB per second broadband connectivity to the neighborhoods surrounding the university. It's part of an experiment to see whether ultrafast Internet connections can help communities become healthier, better educated and more sustainable.
